Groceries for Seniors is a community-based non-profit organization founded in 1999. As a pantry partner of the San Francisco Marin Food Bank and Department of Disability and Aging Services, we deliver to seniors who live in areas not served by existing pantries. Our team provides healthy groceries directly to those seniors in need.
Our mission is simple:
We assist low-income seniors in San Francisco with free food, allowing them to use what little money they have to stay healthy and remain an integral part of our community.
Hunger Facts
The cost of living in San Francisco is much higher than in the rest of the nation. The U.S. poverty level doesn't consider the regional cost of living differences.
- San Francisco has approximately 40,000 seniors whose income falls below the federal poverty line ($13,590 for an individual).
- Our clients live with the daily threat of hunger.
- Being food insecure can have a direct correlation with chronic health problems.
- Food is a basic human need; without an adequate diet, people cannot fight off disease and infection.
- Low income seniors must often choose between purchasing food, paying utility bills or buying medicine.
- Groceries for Seniors distributes nutritious food to approximately 1,000 senior citizens each week.
Get Involved
We rely on volunteers to help assemble the grocery bags we deliver to hungry seniors. Our volunteers assist us Monday through Thursday, 8:30 to 11:00 am, in the basement auditorium of Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco.

Students from USF's Martin-Baró Scholars (MBS) living-learning community load bags of groceries bound for clients of Groceries for Seniors in July. The student volunteers targeted food justice—the concept of equity throughout the food system—because of the prevalence of food insecurity locally and beyond, according to David Holler, USF professor of rhetoric and language and MBS Director.
